Angle of Repose Friday Edition

31 March 2017

Angle of Repose Friday

“I wonder if ever again Americans can have that experience of returning to a home place so intimately known, profoundly felt, deeply loved, and absolutely submitted to? It is not quite true that you can't go home again. I have done it, coming back here. But it gets less likely. We have had too many divorces, we have consumed too much transportation, we have lived too shallowly in too many places.”
-- Wallace Stegner
"Angle of Repose"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's "Angle of Repose Friday" on The After Show. Surveys say, that’s the angle in which a granular substance stays in place on a slope. We insist it’s the angle you recline on your Barcalounger while reading Wallace Stegner’s, “Angle of Repose.”
Germany pushes back on Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s demand for more European NATO spending; House Republicans voted to curb the EPA’s use of science; and, Trump “feels great” about spending millions of dollars of taxpayer money on his weekend Mar-a-Lago junkets, while getting paid by the Trump Organization to do it.
For The Last Half, it's the Friday News Dump and Recycling Center, news that's been re-purposed with a purpose.
The Senate Intelligence Committee hearings have revealed illuminating and harrowing insights into the Kremlin’s spy games, and Trump’s collusion with Putin; and, in an example of investigative journalism at its finest, a Gizmodo reporter makes a compelling case she has found FBI Director James Comey’s secret Twitter account.
All that, plus the Connect! Unite! Act! Daily Kos Community Calendar and more, on The After Show with Wink & Justice.
Do not weep, maiden, for war is kind.
Because your lover threw wild hands toward the sky
And the affrighted steed ran on alone,
Do not weep.
War is kind.
 Hoarse, booming drums of the regiment,
 Little souls who thirst for fight,
 These men were born to drill and die.
 The unexplained glory flies above them,
 Great is the battle-god, great, and his kingdom—
 A field where a thousand corpses lie.
Do not weep, babe, for war is kind.
Because your father tumbled in the yellow trenches,
Raged at his breast, gulped and died,
Do not weep.
War is kind.
 Swift, blazing flag of the regiment,
 Eagle with crest of red and gold,
 These men were born to drill and die.
 Point for them the virtue of slaughter,
 Make plain to them the excellence of killing
 And a field where a thousand corpses lie.
Mother whose heart hung humble as a button
On the bright splendid shroud of your son,
Do not weep.
War is kind.
After Show Links & Show Notes Thursday
Thank God It's Giovedì Edition
30 March 2017
Thank God It's Giovedì
"Honoring the Great God Jove, because Thursday, is truly the gateway to the weekend!"
If it's Thursday on The After Show with Wink & Justice; then Thank God It's Giovedì (that's what we call it, because we can).
Former Tea Party congressman Steve Stockman, is hit with 28-count indictment over charity fraud; after fear-mongering about Ebola in over one hundred tweets, Trump now proposes to slash the agency working on a vaccine; and, Vladimir Putin ascribes a Bush the Elder quote to Reagan, while reaching out to his new conservative American friends at a CNBC interview.
On The Last Half, we report that Trump’s Interior Secretary insists ‘Clean Energy’ is a hoax; and, the Trump Administration decides Trump is not violating the corruption clause of his government lease that prevents him from being both tenant and landlord because he’s the President and you’re not.
All that, plus the Connect! Unite! Act! Daily Kos Community Calendar and more, on The After Show with Wink & Justice.
The Due D’Aumal’s cannonballs
Are being marshmellowed 370 years from their masonic inception
Now lie on the Potomac
The Due D’Aumal’s balls cannonaded
Split
Through mirror teeth Washington D.C.
Black City of white rectangular bits of fear
Blown fluff of fear
O the Duke of Aumal’s balls are raging
Yellow vermin white houses of fear
And beautiful funky people
Diamond heart D’Afrique
Human blood human need
Black booming emotional vibes of life
White geometry of abstract cerebral death
I really saw at Fort McNair
In front of American General’s mansion
A fir-tree tied down to a black coffiny box
Jefferson’s phantom always rides tonight
There’s a solar splendor burst from Eighteenth-Century Cannon of the Due D’Aumal
I’m sure Citizen Lafayette was no dixiecrat
A Little Washington DC Dream”
After Show Links & Show Notes Wednesday
Wednesday's Child is Full of Whoa! Wednesdays Edition
29 March 2017
Wednesday's Child is Full of Whoa! Wednesdays
"I've dug in Alaska and in Canada and Colorado. I was with the crowd in British Honduras where I made my fare back home and almost enough over to cure me of the fever I'd caught. I've dug in California and Australia, all over the world practically. Yeah, I know what gold does to men's souls."
-- B Traven
"The Treasure of the Sierra Madre"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It's "Wednesday's Child is Full of Whoa! Wednesdays" on The After Show. We were going to call it "Germanic Mercury" but you know what they say, one cannot live on Greek and Roman gods, alone. At least, not in America.

The Notorious Ruth Bader Ginsburg tells Texas to stop ignoring science; two black women who worked for Fox News file suit against the network, claiming “top-down racial harassment;” and, the US Women’s National Team ends its boycott after securing an historic contract from USA Hockey.

For The Last Half, we will report on forest protection to mitigate climate change; your browsing history is now being sold to third party vendors; and, the GOP’s fear of the Nuclear Option over Gorsuch.

All that, plus the Connect! Unite! Act! Daily Kos Community Calendar and more on The After Show with Wink & Justice.

I am the people—the mob—the crowd—the mass.
Do you know that all the great work of the world is done through me?
I am the workingman, the inventor, the maker of the world’s food and clothes.
I am the audience that witnesses history. The Napoleons come from me and the Lincolns. They die. And then I send forth more Napoleons and Lincolns.
I am the seed ground. I am a prairie that will stand for much plowing. Terrible storms pass over me. I forget. The best of me is sucked out and wasted. I forget. Everything but Death comes to me and makes me work and give up what I have. And I forget.
Sometimes I growl, shake myself and spatter a few red drops for history to remember. Then—I forget.
When I, the People, learn to remember, when I, the People, use the lessons of yesterday and no longer forget who robbed me last year, who played me for a fool—then there will be no speaker in all the world say the name: “The People,” with any fleck of a sneer in his voice or any far-off smile of derision.
The mob—the crowd—the mass—will arrive then.

After Show Links & Show Notes Tuesday

Red Sky at Morning Tuesdays Edition

28 March 17

Red Sky at Morning Tuesdays

"The 'wild artistic group,' as you put it, has an average age of fifty-seven, and most of us have heart disease and bladder trouble...” ― Richard Bradford "Red Sky at Morning"

Red Sky at Morning Tuesdays on The After Show means only one thing, it's Tuesday, and the refraction of light on the horizon portends something is a-brewing.

An unarmed, legal resident, is in critical condition after ICE agents raided his Chicago home and shot him; as Democratic attorneys general target Trump, Republican attorneys general target them; and, after Jeff Sessions threatened to go after Sanctuary Cities, California Congressman Ted Lieu reminds the nation that Sessions lied under oath, twice, during his confirmation hearing.

For The Last Half, we visit with Chris Reeves, aka Tmsrvo433for an update on the Kansas-04 special election; the Kansas senate moving on Medicaid expansion; a Hero is feted; and, the US Senate just voted to allow your ISP to sell your browsing history.

All that, plus the Connect! Unite! Act! Daily Kos Community Calendar and more, on The After Show with Wink & Justice.

But I love the I, steel I-beam
that my father sold. They poured the pig iron
into the mold, and it fed out slowly,
a bending jelly in the bath, and it hardened,
Bessemer, blister, crucible, alloy, and he
marketed it, and bought bourbon, and Cream
of Wheat, its curl of butter right
in the middle of its forehead, he paid for our dresses
with his metal sweat, sweet in the morning
and sour in the evening. I love the I,
frail between its flitches, its hard ground
and hard sky, it soars between them
like the soul that rushes, back and forth,
between the mother and father. What if they had loved each other,
how would it have felt to be the strut
joining the floor and roof of the truss?
I have seen, on his shirt-cardboard, years
in her desk, the night they made me, the penciled
slope of her temperature rising, and on
the peak of the hill, first soldier to reach
the crest, the Roman numeral I--
I, I, I, I,
girders of identity, head on,
embedded in the poem. I love the I
for its premise of existence--our I--when I was
born, part gelid, I lay with you
on the cooling table, we were all there, a
forest of felled iron. The I is a pine,
resinous, flammable root to crown,
which throws its cones as far as it can in a fire.

Metaphor Monday Edition

27 March 2017

Metaphor Monday

"The basis of fairy tale is in reality. The basis of reality is fairy tales."

"City of the Dead"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's Metaphor Monday on The After Show. This is the day when we call things what they are. No Similes allowed. Not today.
Team Trump rolls out its plan to kill Climate Action, while making up facts that will ruin your children’s lives; Ivanka Trump is set to attend a Women’s Empowerment Summit in Berlin next month; and, Motivational Speaker Tony Robbins, slams Trump for his “fake alpha” identity.
For The Last Halfwe report that Trump’s Pentagon Budget of more guns and less butter is great news for middlemen of military hardware; and, Trump is really like Andrew Jackson in one important and largely ignored way.
All that plus, the Connect! Unite! Act! Daily Kos Community Calendar and more, on The After Show with Wink & Justice.
While this America settles in the mould of its vulgarity, heavily thickening to empire, And protest, only a bubble in the molten mass, pops and sighs out, and the mass hardens,
 I sadly smiling remember that the flower fades to make fruit, the fruit rots to make earth. Out of the mother; and through the spring exultances, ripeness and decadence; and home to the mother.
 You making haste haste on decay: not blameworthy; life is good, be it stubbornly long or suddenly A mortal splendor: meteors are not needed less than mountains: shine, perishing republic.
 But for my children, I would have them keep their distance from the thickening center; corruption Never has been compulsory, when the cities lie at the monster’s feet there are left the mountains.
 And boys, be in nothing so moderate as in love of man, a clever servant, insufferable master. There is the trap that catches noblest spirits, that caught—they say—God, when he walked on earth.
The GOP kills the infrastructure bill because of the ‘Buy American’ rule; Exxon says it has lost a year’s worth of Rex Tillerson’s sock puppet emails it was ordered to turn over to the New York Attorney General; and, Ivanka Trump lives in New York, works at the White House, but isn’t an employee subject to federal rules.
For The Last Half, it's the Friday News Dump and Recycling Center, news that's been re-purposed with a purpose.
Russia sold off one-fifth of its state-owned oil giant, Rosneft, in December, but we still don’t know who bought it all; and, Wisconsin is the ‘point man’ for a billionaire and corporate-funded coup to rewrite the US Constitution.
All that, plus the Connect! Unite! Act! Daily Kos Community Calendar and more, on The After Show with Wink & Justice.
